Club Foundations
The Central Highlands Working Gundog Club (CHWGC) was was inaugurated in December 1992 for the purpose of conducting retrieving and field trials. While there were, and still are, several Victorian clubs running retrieving trials, these clubs had priorities and committments other than just retrieving, and many were breed specific clubs. This club was aimed at people in the Ballarat, Geelong and Melbourne areas, and more specifically, at people who wanted to improve their dogs working abilities. The club's resources are wholly directed toward retrieving and field trials, and assisting it's members to improve their dogs working abilities.
CHWGC Events
Currently, CHWGC runs two retrieving trials per year, the first is held over the Easter long weekend, and is in fact one of the biggest events run in Australia. The Easter trial is held in the Benalla area and is run over three days, providing competitors with three stakes (Novice, Restricted and All Age) each day. This trial attracts competitors and judges from many states in Australia and is always a fantastic weekend of trialling.
The second trial is held in the Ballarat area over two days. Once again the club runs three stakes on both days of this trial, catering for all levels of dogs and handlers. We also usually put on a Field & Game working test, which is basically the equivalent to a beginners retrieving trial stake, the difference being that anyone can enter, whether they have a registered gundog or not. This is a great way to try the sport out and get a taste of what it is like to compete in a retrieving trial.

Each year CHWGC also reserves dates for field trials with the governing body, the VCA, and endevours to run them wherever possible. Field trials rely heavily on the availability of wild game and appropriate terrain being accessible. Unfortunately with the tough drought conditions being experienced at the moment field trials have been few and far between.
Committee
The club is run by a committee, a group of dedicated individuals who look after the management of the club. The majority of our committee members train for and compete in retrieving trials, but many are also passionate about keeping our field trials going strong. They are all passionate not only about the sport but also about their canine partners.
